SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Ohio baseball team (10-7) fell to USC Upstate (9-8-1), 8-1, in the opening contest of a three-game weekend set on Friday (March 16) at Cleveland S. Harley Baseball Park.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Bobcats.

The Spartans limited Ohio to four hits. Redshirt senior catcher Nick Bredeson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) accounted for two singles and drove in the Bobcats' only run.

USC Upstate plated eight runs on 12 hits. Freshman right fielder Mason Stewart led the way for the Spartans, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman second baseman Kyle Gensler doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored another. Redshirt junior designated hitter Toran Shahidi collected two singles, walked, plated a run and scored two more.

The Spartans opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shahidi led off the frame by being hit by a pitch. One out later, senior catcher Charlie Carpenter singled to center. Gensler drove in Shahidi with a double down the left field line, then Carpenter scored USC Upstate's second run an RBI ground out by Stewart.

Ohio made it a one-run game in the top of the third. Freshman second baseman Aaron Levy (Cincinnati, Ohio) coaxed a one-out walk, then scored one out later on a base hit to left by Bredeson.

That's as close as the Bobcats got, though, as USC Upstate scored five runs in the fifth and added another insurance run in the sixth.

Redshirt senior southpaw starting pitcher Gerry Salisbury (Brunswick, Ohio) took the loss on the mound for Ohio falling to 2-3 on the year. He struck out four but gave up seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks.

Senior right-handed starting pitcher Blake Whitney earned the pitching victory for the Spartans, improving to 3-0 on the season. He fanned nine while giving up one earned run on four hits and a walk. Sophomore right-handed reliever Sean Hupp pitched one scoreless inning of relief for USC Upstate. He struck out one.

Ohio will look to bounce back and even the weekend series when it faces USC Upstate again on Saturday (March 17) in a 2 p.m. ET contest at Cleveland S. Harley Baseball Park. Redshirt senior righty Michael Klein (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) is scheduled to get the start on the mound for the Bobcats and oppose senior right-hander Kevin Hickey of the Spartans.
