BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Sophomore catcher Tanner Piechnick (Canonsburg, Pa.) turned in his third-straight multi-hit effort, but the Ohio baseball team (12-10, 1-2 MAC) was edged by Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green (6-17, 2-1 MAC), 3-1, in the Sunday (March 25) series finale at Steller Field.

The Bobcats dropped two of three games to the Falcons on the opening weekend of 2018 league play. Bowling Green came away with a 6-4 win on Friday (March 23) in the series opener but Ohio rebounded with an 11-3 victory on Saturday (March 24).

Ohio and Bowling Green battled the elements in addition to each other on Sunday with first-pitch temperature reading 28 degrees. The Bobcats outhit the Falcons, 7-6, but committed two errors -- one of which led to a run -- while Bowling Green put together a clean afternoon in the field.

Piechnick was the lone player on either team to record a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 to record his sixth game of the season with at least two hits. The Bobcats and the Falcons combined for just three extra-base hits, with Ohio accounting for two of them as junior first baseman Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) and senior left fielder Evan Bourn (Overland, Park, Kan.) each logged a double.

Bowling Green plated two of its three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior shortstop Neil Lambert led off with a double to left center, and redshirt junior right fielder Jeff Scott followed by drawing a walk. Both moved up 90 feet when junior designated hitter Brad Croy laid down a sacrifice bunt. Lambert scored the game's first run by way of a base hit through the left side by senior first baseman Randy Righter, then Scott scored on the play as Ohio committed its first error.

After the Bobcats stranded a pair of runners on base in both the top of the fourth and fifth, the Falcons extended their lead to 3-0 in the home half of the fifth. Senior catcher Justin Mott beat out an infield single to first and scored two outs later when Croy delivered an RBI single to right.

Ohio plated its lone run of the ballgame in the top of the sixth. Rott smacked a one-out double to left, advanced to third on a single to right by Piechnick and then scored one out later on a base hit to right by redshirt sophomore right fielder Ryan Sargent (Algonquin, Ill.). Unfortunately, that's as close as the Bobcats got as Ohio again stranded two runners on base in the sixth and put just one more man on over the final three frames.

Senior left-handed starting pitcher Butch Baird (Big Prairie, Ohio) struck out five over five innings on the mound. He was saddled with the pitching defeat for Ohio after giving up three runs -- two of which were earned -- on five hits and two walks, dropping him to 1-2 on the year. Freshman righty Eddie Kutt (Westlake, Calif.) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, fanning two while giving up one hit and one walk. Redshirt senior right-hander Jake Roehn (Sandwich, Ill.) worked 1.2 scoreless frames. He struck out one.

Redshirt senior right-handed starting pitcher Tyler Anderson worked 5.2 innings on the bump for Bowling Green. He improved to 2-4 on the season after striking out four while permitting one earned run on seven hits and a walk. Senior southpaw Kody Brown logged his second save of the year after pitching 3.1 scoreless frames. He fanned three while allowing just one walk.

Ohio will play its second midweek road game of the season when visits Morehead State (14-11) on Tuesday (March 27) in a 5 p.m. ET contest at Allen Field.
