ATHENS, Ohio -- Nate Faanes has been promoted to linebackers coach of the Ohio football program after spending the previous three seasons as a graduate assistant, as announced by 15th-year head coach Frank Solich today.

The promotion of Faanes comes after Ron Collins was promoted from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator/safeties coach in February following the retirement of Jimmy Burrow.

"I am extremely excited and honored to be named the linebackers coach here at Ohio," said Faanes. I have been lucky enough to experience how special this university and the Athens community both are. It is a great opportunity to continue to work for Coach Solich, Coach Collins and the staff, as well as coach a great group of student-athletes."

Faanes assisted Collins in coaching Ohio's linebackers the last two seasons after working with the running backs in 2016. Quentin Poling (First Team, 2017), Chad Moore (Second Team, 2017) and Evan Croutch (Second Team, 2018) garnered All-Mid-American Conference honors during his time as the graduate assistant for the linebackers.

"Nate has been great working with both our coaching staff and our players," said Solich. "In addition to working with the linebackers directly under Ron the last two years, he has experience working outside of our program. He's done a great job for us up to this point, and I feel extremely comfortable promoting him to this role. He received a full endorsement from our entire coaching staff."

Prior to arriving in Athens, Faanes served as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 2013-15. During his tenure with the Blugolds, Faanes coached tight ends, quarterbacks and running backs.

Faanes was the quarterbacks coach at Winona Senior High School from 2009-12. He graduated from Eau Claire North High School in Eau Claire, Wis., in 2009 and from Winona State in '15.

Over the last 14 years under the leadership of Solich, Ohio has recorded 106 wins, captured four MAC East Division titles, appeared in 10 bowl games and tallied four bowl victories. The Bobcats recorded their second-straight nine-win season in 2018, capping the year off with a 27-0 shutout of San Diego State in the 2018 DXL Frisco Bowl to record their second-straight bowl win. Ohio is set to return three All-MAC selections from the 2018 squad, including quarterback Nathan Rourke (Oakville, Ontario, Canada), defensive back Javon Hagan (Jacksonville, Fla.) and punter Michael Farkas (Mishawaka, Ind.).

Ohio kicks off the 2019 regular season on Saturday, Aug. 31, with a matchup against Rhode Island at Peden Stadium.
