WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Redshirt senior kicker Louie Zervos (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) of the Ohio football team has been named to the 2019 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Preseason Watch List, as announced today by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.

Accomplishments are tabulated throughout the season and the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award will announce its 20 semifinalists on Thursday, Nov. 7. From this list, a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers selects the top three finalists for the award, announced on Tuesday, Nov. 26. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 12 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

The 28th Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet at West Palm Beach's Kravis Center for the Performing Arts on Dec. 9.

Zervos, who has made the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Preseason Watch List each of the last three years, is one of 30 of the best returning kickers in the country highlighted on the list and one of two from the Mid-American Conference, joining Central Michigan senior Ryan Tice.

A health services administration major, Zervos ranks second in program history with 335 career points, 57 career field goals made, 70 career field goals attempted and an 81.4 percent (57-of-70) career field goal percentage. He holds the program record for career extra points made with 164 and ranks second with 169 career extra points attempted and fourth with a 97.0 (164-of-169) extra point percentage. Zervos All-MAC First Team honors as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and All-MAC Third Team selection as a redshirt sophomore the following season. His 2018 redshirt junior season saw him rank 26th in the country and second in the MAC with 107 points scored, the seventh-most in a single season in program history. He converted all 68 of his extra point attempts, breaking his own school record, and made 13 of his 17 field goal attempts, tying him for the 10-most field goals made in a single season in program history.

Ohio has now placed players on six award watch lists heading into the 2019 season. In addition to Zervos being named to the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Watch List, senior quarterback Nathan Rourke (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) was named to both the Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien Award Watch Lists, redshirt senior center Steven Hayes (Dacula, Ga.) was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List, redshirt senior safety Javon Hagan (Jacksonville, Fla.) and junior cornerback Jamal Hudson (Miami, Fla.) were named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List and Hagan was also named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List.

Ohio will kick off the 2019 regular season on Saturday, Aug. 31, with a home matchup against Rhode Island at Peden Stadium. The contest is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. For ticket information, call the ticket office at 1-800-575-2287 or click here.
