ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio football team continued prepping for the 2019 season this morning at Peden Stadium, with scrimmage work highlighting the ninth practice of fall camp.

The session was highlighted by three offensive touchdown and three takeaways by the defense.

"I'm not usually jumping up and down after the first scrimmage, and, in fact, usually you're wondering how is it every going to work," said 15th-year head coach Frank Solich. "But I'm encouraged with it."

Redshirt freshman running back O'Shaan Allison (Norristown, Pa.) made a nice cutback move and scored a 10-yard touchdown to provide the first points of the scrimmage.

"I saw the d-line slanted to the right. The linebackers all overloaded to the right too, so I knew immediately the backside was going to be open," said Allison. "I had to press my landmark first, then cut back. It was wide open."

Allison helped Ohio compile 162 rushing yards, accounting for 29 of them on nine touches. Junior running back De'Montre Tuggle (Channelview, Texas) led the way on the ground with 64 yards on 12 carries. Redshirt junior running back Ja'Vahri Portis (Cincinnati, Ohio) logged 33 rushing yards on 10 touches and also chipped in three catches for 19 yards.

"We were flying around," said Allison. "There were a few mistakes, but we bounced back and did everything 100 percent today."

The next score came via a pick six, as redshirt freshman safety Jamison Collier (Snellville, Ga.) intercepted a pass and ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown.

The first touchdown pass of the scrimmage featured redshirt freshman Joe Mischler (Erie, Pa.) connecting with freshman tight end Casey Clanton (Phoenix, Ariz.) for a three-yard strike.

A sight Ohio fans hope to see plenty of in 2019 occurred in the middle of the scrimmage when senior quarterback Nathan Rourke (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to redshirt junior wide receiver Cameron Odom (Bedford, Ohio). Rourke was an efficient 9-of-10 for 171 yards on the day.

The catch of the day came from redshirt senior wide receiver Camryn Snow (Miamisburg, Ohio), who made a nice back shoulder snag on a 22-yard completion from Rourke.

The defense tallied two more interceptions late in the scrimmage. Redshirt freshman cornerback John Gregory (Indian Land, S.C.) ended a scoring threat by picking off a pass in the end zone, and freshman safety Jett Elad (Cleveland, Ohio) came up with the third and final interception of the day.

Ohio's defense accounted for five tackles for loss and three sacks during the scrimmage, with redshirt junior linebacker Dylan Conner (Fort Wayne, Ind.), redshirt sophomore linebacker T.J. Robinson (Jacksonville, Fla.) and redshirt freshman safety Isaac Gill (Philo, Ohio) leading the charge with four tackles apiece.

"The tackling was pretty good for first time live with anything," said Solich. "Creating some turnovers is always good. Hopefully we're picking up where we left off last year on that end of it. We've got to execute. We've got to have some young guys come along at certain spots. If that happens, we can have us a good defensive football team."

Ohio will look to build upon the work done in the scrimmage when it takes the field again on Monday (Aug. 12) for a 9:05 a.m. ET practice.

"I think we're ahead of where we normally are at this time, especially with the guys who have been around for a little bit," said Solich. "The execution level was pretty good. We have some explosive guys."
