DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Redshirt senior punter/kickoff specialist Michael Farkas (Mishawaka, Ind.) and redshirt senior placekicker Louie Zervos (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) have both accepted an invitation to compete in the SPIRAL Tropical Bowl, which will be held Jan. 12, 2020, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The SPIRAL Tropical Bowl is a premier FBS Division I level College Football All Star Game played in Daytona Beach, Fla., annually in mid January. The SPIRAL Tropical Bowl showcases the top college football seniors to NFL scouts and GM's who travel from around the country to the event. The weekend is focused on scouting, teaching, and football. The Inaugural 2016 game was held at FIU/FIU North Stadium and the 2017 SPIRAL Tropical Bowl in cooperation with the City of Daytona Beach moved to Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla., and has since returned .The SPIRAL Tropical Bowl has partnered with the Daytona Beach Resort & Conference Center as the main Host Hotel for the "Tropical Bowl Weekend." The organizing company East Preps LLC. is responsible for several high end college football all star games at FIU since 2013 and the SPIRAL Tropical Bowl has featured 70+ NFL Scouts and 26+ NFL Teams. Over 110 SPIRAL Tropical Bowl alumni have gone on to the NFL since it's inception in 2016.
Farkas ranks second in program history with 219 career punts and a career punting average of 41.4 and third with 9,073 career punting yards. He punted 47 times for 1,959 yards (41.7 yards per punt) in the 2019 regular season. Three of his punts went for at least 50 yards, with a season-long of 56 at Pitt on Sept. 7. He ranked second in the MAC in punts fair caught (20) and third in punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line (22). Farkas garnered All-MAC Second Team recognition in 2019 after being named to the Third Team in 2016 and the First Team in '18.
Zervos ranks first in program history with 425 career points and is currently ranked 22nd in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history in scoring, third in MAC history behind former Miami running back Travis Prentice (468 points; 1996-99) and Toledo placekicker Jameson Vest (446 points; 2015-18) and second among active players behind Georgia senior placekicker Rodrigo Blankenship (432 points). He broke Ohio's previous program record of 409 points that was held by former placekicker Matt Weller (2009-12). Zervos ranks first in program history with 215 career extra points made and has made his last 123 (second-most in MAC history). He also ranks second in program history with 70 career field goals made. He was named a Phil Steele and USA Today Freshman All-American and earned All-MAC First Team honors as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and was named to the All-MAC Third Team as a redshirt sophomore in '17.
Farkas, Zervos and the rest of the Bobcats (6-6, 5-3 MAC) will take on Nevada (7-5, 4-4 MW) in the 23rd Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Friday (Jan. 3) at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. MT, and the contest will be nationally televised on ESPN. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield IMG College.
