ATHENS -- The Ohio field hockey team (8-7, 4-2) finished their regular season schedule with a 2-1 loss to UC Davis on Senior Day at Pruitt Field.
The rain came down hard in Athens, Ohio on Senior Day for Ohio field hockey, where seniors Kendall Ballard (Charlottesville, Va.), Brittany Keen (Perth, Western Australia), Amy Edgerton (Louisville, Ky.), and Karynne Baker (Falls Church, Va.) were honored before the match.
Toward the end of the first quarter, however, it was UC Davis delivered the first punch, scoring with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. The Aggies were able to find the net again halfway through the second quarter, when Sara Janetzky put one home for UC Davis on a penalty corner opportunity. At the half, junior Leah Warren (Hamilton, New Zealand) proved to be a key defensive player for Ohio, recording two defensive saves, including one as time expired in the second quarter.
In the third period it was the Bobcats who controlled the attack, with Baker and junior Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) putting two shots each on the Aggie goalkeeper. In the fourth quarter Ohio was able to get on the board when Ballard scored her eight goal of the season, assisted by Keen and Edgerton.
The Bobcats chose to pull their goalie, sophomore Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) with about two minutes left in the game, bringing on junior Claire Buckey (Powell, Ohio) as the extra defender, but UC Davis halted the Bobcat comeback.
Up next, the Bobcats head to Oxford, Ohio for the 2019 MAC Field Hockey Tournament. Matchups and times will be added to ohiobobcats.com when they are finalized.
