Ohio Men’s Basketball Announces Addition Of James To 2018-19 Signing Class

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio men's basketball program has added Torey James (Hickory, N.C.) to its 2018-19 recruiting class, fifth-year head coach Saul Phillips announced on Wednesday (May 16) to its 2018-19 recruiting class.

James joins prep forwards Mason McMurray (Stow, Ohio) and Nate Springs (Charlotte, N.C.), who signed with the Bobcats as part of the early signing period of the 2018-19 recruiting class on Nov. 9, 2017, redshirt sophomore wing Connor Murrell (Sioux City, Iowa), who signed with Ohio as a transfer from Indian Hills Community College on April 17, junior guard Antonio Cowart, Jr. (McComb, Miss.), who signed with Ohio as a transfer from Southwest Mississippi Community College on April 26, and prep guard Jason Preston (Orlando, Fla.), who signed with Ohio on May 16. The 6-foot-5-inch, 185-pound guard will come to Ohio as a freshman with four years of eligibility remaining.

James averaged 21.3 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game at Hickory High School under head coach Andy Poplin as a senior in 2017-18, earning both all-conference and all-district honors for his efforts. He was invited to compete in the North Carolina East-West All-Star Game. James also competed on the AAU circuit for PSB Elite under head coach Sim Frazier.

"Torey is a long, athletic wing and a good defender that can really shoot the ball," said Phillips. "He is a good fit on a lot of levels for us."

Born April 12, 2000, James is the son of Corey James and Meredith James.

Ohio has won 67 games over the past four seasons under Phillips and made back-to-back Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal appearances in 2016 and '17. The Bobcats advanced to the College Basketball Invitational Semifinals in 2016. Ohio has tallied 10 All-MAC selections over the last four years under Phillips. Returning for the Bobcats in 2018-19 will be senior guard Jordan Dartis (Newark, Ohio) – an All-MAC Honorable Mention selection each of the past two seasons – as well as guard Teyvion Kirk (Joilet, Ill.), who garnered MAC All-Freshman Team honors in 2017-18. Also returning for Ohio next season is forward Jason Carter (Johnstown, Ohio), who missed all but three games last year due to injury after earning a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team in 2016-17.
