ATHENS, Ohio –The Ohio men's basketball team officially begins the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, Nov. 7 when the Bobcats host Wilberforce. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. 

Wednesday's game will be streamed live on WatchESPN and the ESPN app, with Marty Bannister and Toni Roesch on the call. The contest will not be broadcast on the Ohio IMG Sports Network due to the Ohio and Miami football game, however, those listening to that radio broadcast will get in-game updates from Jake Hromada, who will be on site in the Convo. 

The Bobcats unofficially began the season on Saturday, Nov. 3 for their exhibition game against Rio Grande, defeating the RedStorm, 93-58, inside the Convocation Center. 

Sophomore guard Teyvion Kirk (Joliet, Ill.) led the way with 20 points and a game-high four steals, followed closely behind by redshirt sophomore forward Jason Carter (Johnstown, Ohio) with 18 points and two steals. 

Kirk and Carter were two of five Ohio players in double figures. Junior guard Antonio Cowart, Jr. (McComb, Miss.) went 4-of-6 from the field to finish with 10 points. He also had three rebounds and an assist in his 23 minutes. Senior forward Doug Taylor (Columbus, Ohio) went 5-of-7 from the field to finish with 10 points while also compiling a game-high seven rebounds and a game-high two blocks over 23 minutes. Redshirt freshman forward Ben Vander Plas (Ripon, Wis.) added 14 points and four rebounds over 19 minutes. 

The Bobcats finished last season with a 14-17 record and a 11-7 Mid-American Conference mark. 

The Bobcats return seven from last season, including guard Teyvion Kirk who garnered MAC All-Freshman Team honors in 2017-18, as well as led the Bobcats in points per game (15.3) and steals (42).

Senior forward Doug Taylor and guard/forward Gavin Block (Lincoln, Ill.) will also be back for the Bobcats. Taylor led the squad last season with 61 blocks and 7.1 rebounds per game, while Block added 8.5 points and a team-leading 106 assists. 

Senior guard Jordan Dartis (Newark, Ohio) – an All-MAC Honorable Mention selection each of the past two seasons- and redshirt junior guard James Gollon (Stevens Point, Wis.) will also return to the Convo floor this season. Dartis averaged 13.1 points for Ohio during the 2017-18 season, while leading the Bobcats with 78 three-pointers made, while Gollon led the Bobcats at the charity stripe, shooting 87 percent from the free throw line. 

Also returning for Ohio this season is forward Jason Carter, who missed all but three games last year due to injury after earning a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team in 2016-17.

Redshirt freshman forward Ben Vander Plas will see action for the first time in a Bobcat uniform this season, after missing all of last year due to injury.

Bobcat fans will also see nine new faces on the court this season, with transfers Connor Murrell (Sioux City, Iowa), Jarrell Reeves (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Antonio Cowart, Jr., and freshmen Jason Preston (Orlando, Fla.), Nate Springs (Charlotte, N.C.), Torey James (Hickory, N.C.), John Tenerowicz (Cleveland, Ohio), Chris McGraw (Columbus, Ohio) and Mason McMurray (Stow, Ohio) seeing court time for Ohio in their first season with the Green and White

Wilberforce is currently 3-1 overall under second-year head coach Kevin Waters, and will take on Harris-Stowe State University tonight (Nov. 6), before traveling to Athens. 

Wilberfoce's only loss of the season was an 88-81 defeat at the hands of (RV)Voorhees College on Oct. 26 in their opener, despite Jabril Hunter's 26 points and 14 rebounds. Wilberforce followed that up the next night with a 118-117 OT win over Allen, with Lajuane Marshall scoring 24 points. 

The Bulldogs then defeated Point Park, 93-89 on Nov. 1, before playing their first home game of the season, a 71-57 victory against Clark State CC. 

Overall, Wilberforce is shooting 53.2 percent from the field, 46.8 percent from three-point range and .60.7 percent from the free throw line. The Bulldogs average 34.3 rebounds per game, while registering 22 steals, 11 blocks, 49 assists, while turning the ball over 49 times. 

Wilberforce was 10-15 last year and is an NAIA independent institution.

The Bobcats return to action on Monday, Nov. 12 when the Bobcats take on Campbell in Athens in the first game of the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN3.
