ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio men's basketball redshirt sophomore forward Ben Vander Plas has been named to the 2019-20 Academic All-District® Men's Basketball Team, selected by CoSIDA, the organization announced today (Feb. 20).
Vander Plas (Ripon, Wis.), who was selected as one of five honorees in District 5, is a Communications Studies major and currently sports a 3.98 GPA.
This season, Vander Plas has played and started all 26 games. Vander Plas is second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game, while pulling down a team-leading 6.9 boards per contest. Vander Plas is shooting 50.3 percent from the field and 32.2 percent from three-point range. In conference play, Vander Plas has been a force, averaging a team-leading 17.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from three-point range.
Vander Plas scored a career-high 28 points on Jan. 14 at Buffalo, going 11-of-20 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range. This season, Vander Plas has also registered five double doubles, six 20-point games, and has led Ohio in scoring 12 times and in rebounds 10 times. This season Vander Plas has registered 22 double-figure scoring games.
Vander Plas is coming off of a 17-point, seven rebound performance against Central Michigan on Feb. 18. The performance led the Bobcats to a 77-69 victory over CMU, their first since 2014.
The NCAA Division I teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 5 comprising all student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within the district.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if applicable) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced between March 9-12.
