BUFFALO, N.Y. –The Ohio softball team (29-19, 10-8 MAC) returned to action on Friday afternoon (May 3), shutting out Buffalo (10-30-1, 6-8-1 MAC), 2-0, in the first game of the three-game series.
After an uneventful inning from Ohio in the top of the first inning, Buffalo would get runners on, with a walk and a ground-rule double, putting runners on second and third with two outs. However, starting pitcher Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) would get the final batter of the inning to strikeout, sending the game to the second inning with the game still scoreless.
Ohio would get a runner on in the top of the second inning when senior Natalie Alvarez (Long Beach, Calif.) crushed a one-out double to left field. However, the Bobcats would be unable to get her around, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with the game still tied at 0-0.
After Ohio sent Buffalo down in order in the bottom of the second, Ohio would get another runner on in the top of the third when junior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) reached on an error. However, the Bulls would then turn a double play to send the inning with the game still scoreless.
The Bulls would threaten in the bottom of the third inning, getting runners on first and second with two-outs. However, the Bobcats' defense would get the final batter to foul out, sending the game to the fourth inning with the game still scoreless.
Ohio would get runners on in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) led the inning off with a hit up the middle. However, a force out and a double play would end the Bobcats inning, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with the game still tied at 0-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning from UB, the Bobcats would threaten in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, freshman Charlee Pond (Redondo Beach, Calif.) would reach on a walk. With two outs, senior MacKenzie Brunswick (Bellefontaine, Ohio) would reach on a single through the left side. However, the Bobcats would be unable to score. Sending the game to the bottom of the fifth with it still tied at 0-0.
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth for the Bulls, Ohio would strike in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Yun would triple to centerfield and would score immediately on an RBI double from senior Alex Day (Hilliard, Ohio). Day would move to third on a single from senior Morgan Geno (Chillicothe, Ohio), Freshman Taytum Hargrave (Warsaw, Ind.) would then enter to run for Geno and then steal second. With two outs, Pond would then reach on a single to shallow leftfield, scoring Day and giving Ohio a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth inning.
The two runs would be all the Bobcats would need as the Ohio defense would retire the final six UB batters to secure the 2-0 victory.
At the plate, Ohio scored two runs on seven hits and did not commit an error, while Buffalo was held scoreless on three hits while committing one error.
Individually, Yun led the way, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, while Day added a double, run scored and RBI. Alvarez recorded a double, while Pond, Brunswick and Geno all recorded hits for the Bobcats.
In the circle, McCrady pitched all seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits, while walking three and striking out five.
Up next, the Bobcats wrap up the three-game series with Buffalo on Saturday, May 4 with a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
