Ohio Women's Basketball Selected for WNIT; To Host High Point in First Round


ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio Women's Basketball team will host High Point in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Thursday (March 21) inside the Convocation Center. Tip-off time will be announced at a later date.

The Bobcats are making an appearance in the WNIT for the second time in program history, and Ohio is 2-2 in the tournament all-time. Ohio made the WNIT in 2016, taking down Marshall and Virginia Tech at home before falling to Temple on the road in the round of 16. Ohio also made the tournament in 2017, falling to Penn State. 

Tickets will be $5 and will be available on OhioBobcats.com. The game will also be streamed on either ESPN3 or ESPN+. 

This will be the fourth all-time meeting between Ohio and High Point, with the Bobcats leading the series, 3-0. Ohio last played High Point in 2017, with Ohio defeating the Panthers, 64-61.

Ohio is 27-5 and is No. 34 in the latest RPI. The Bobcats made it to the Mid-American Conference Championship Game and won the MAC East regular season crown after going 14-4 during conference play. Sophomore guard Cece Hooks (Dayton, Ohio) was named the MAC Defensive Player of Year and redshirt freshman Erica Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) won MAC Freshman of the Year and MAC Sixth Player of the Year. Hooks was named First Team All-MAC, while Johnson and junior guard Amani Burke (Columbus, Ohio) were named Third Team All-MAC. Hooks made the MAC All-Defensive team, while Johnson was named to the All-Freshman team.

High Point finished the season 22-8 and 15-3 in the Big South. The Panthers finished second in the Big South and was upset in the second round of the Big South Tournament by Charleston Southern. HPU is No. 114 in the RPI. Emma Bockrath leads the Panthers with 16.3 points per game.

Overall, four teams will represent the MAC in the WNIT. The Bobcats are joined by Kent State, Miami and Toledo. A total of 41 teams in the WNIT won at least 20 games this season.

Second-round games are slated for March 23-26; Round 3 runs March 27-29 and Round 4 is scheduled from March 30-31. The semifinals of the WNIT will be held April 3-4, and the championship game will be played at 3 p.m. ET, Saturday, April 6 and be televised on CBS Sports Network.

The winner of the Ohio – High Point game will face the winner of IUPUI and Middle Tennessee State in the second round. Time, date and place for the second round will be announced after both games are finished.
